Connie Britton On her Special Night

I want to be Connie Britton I’m not afraid to admit it. Or, actually, as Tami Taylor I want to be Connie Britton. While watching Friday Night lights, I first fell in love with her. Mrs. T was a special character – beautiful, strong, and sassy – but a life was breathed into her by Connie that no one else could.

My idolization grew, over five gloriously heart-wrenching seasons. Even the flaws of Tami are perfect, she is so perfect. I loved that she was a feminist in the midst of a sexist, behind-the-times Texas town, I loved the way she stood up to her husband and I loved the way she was so intelligent and inquisitive than any other “wife” archetype out there. For Coach Taylor and his tender looks, a lot can be said but in my opinion the star of the show is truly Connie. I even started fantasizing about having a marriage just like Tami and Eric’s, my obsession grew so deep, and in front of a mirror, I’ll even cop to practice my “Y’all”.
It’s impossible for many Connie lovers to look at her and not see Tami T., but it’s the other way around for me: Tami is Connie. Which is why to watch her as Rayna James is so natural, who is country star on Nashville with equally spitfire. There are all the best C.B. qualities: That damn hair, an inner glow and that never-ending sass. If hairs of Gretchen Weiner were full of secrets, Connie’s are full of dust of magical pixie. Nashville’s second season will start this week, which promises way more gossip, drama, biting Connie Britton realism and Southern drawl.

Connie may not be the Southern spitfire off-screen, we’re all used to, but everything I aspire to be, she embodies. In the most beautiful way, two years ago her decision to adopt her son at age 44 flies in the face of tradition. It’s the rigid and outdated definitions of family and love, if there’s one thing I’m sick of in this age and day, and she seems to be with me right there. Adopting a baby on her own will into her 40s wasn’t the way she would start her family for sure, but in the way of her happiness she wasn’t about to let anything stand, so she re-think her plan. To see such great things happening for her is cool to see.

For months now, I’ve had Nashville’s momentous day checked off in my planner, but for my girl Connie, tonight marks another special occasion. In the Outstanding Lead Actress category, she’s up for an Emmy – her fourth. As she’s up against Claire Danes, Kerry Washington and Elisabeth Moss etc, therefore her competition is tough. It feels like a win for Team Connie by just seeing her there among heavy-hitter dramas like Homeland and Mad Men, but we know it’s probably a long shot. We know she’ll be there looking radiant with a huge smile on her face, in her most sparkly dress and with her hair done up to high heaven, regardless of how the award show plays out.
