Muna Jama was a Muslim contestant for the Miss Universe Pageant who chose to wear a long kaftan during the bikini segment of the show.

This is not allowed according to the rules of the pageant but Jama was exempted from these rules by the organizers. She made a history by becoming the first competitor ever to wear a kaftan during the swimsuit round when she arrived at the stage while wearing a printed kaftan, circle earrings, platform heels and a dazzling choker.

Jama wrote on her Instagram that she was able to do so due to her bravery and flexibility and the sacrifice of the people present there for a positive change. She added that this special moment has proved that she can do anything that she sets for herself while she also thanked those who supported her.

The model said that this beautiful dress kaftan can be used at any occasion like beach, in public and other places without being exposed. She has the right to choose the perfect dress for her body and she chose the kaftan while others also have the right to do the same and they wore a bikini according to their choice.

After wearing a modest outfit on swimsuit stage, Jama has now joined model Halima Aden who wore hijab and a burkini during 2016 Miss Minnesota USA pageant.

After the competition, several took to the Instagram account of Jama and supported her for standing firm on the things she believes.

She said during an interview that she wasn’t representing any religion or race in the competition but she was only showing her normal life. She said that there is nothing strange for happening of such thing for the first time as women were also not allowed to vote few decades ago.

Jama is also founder of a start-up to address issues that force migration and child abuse.
